California Juvenile Crimes Trending Downward

From 1998 to 2015, the rate of juvenile crimes has declined from 19.6 to 5.3 felony arrests per 1,000 youths between 10 and 17-years-old in California. An increase from 13.9 to 15 was seen as a small spike from 2005 to 2008, but the general trend over the last 17 years has been a welcomed decrease. However, while the rate of California juvenile crimes may be less than the previous century, for now at least, that does not mean that these crimes have stopped or that youthful criminal offenders are no longer being arrested or falsely accused.

Juvenile Crimes Statistics in California

As of 2015, the highest rate of juvenile felony arrests was for violent crimes, making up 34% of all juvenile crimes in the state of California. Violent criminal offenses are not only the most common charges against minors but the majority of false accusations are for violent crimes, as well. Statistics have shown that in general, boys are more likely to be charged with a violent crime in California as males accounted for 84% of all violent crimes in the state.

A close second, 31% of juvenile arrests were reported for property crimes, and 24% for various other offenses such as weapons charges and hit-and-runs. Property crimes and weapons charges may seem a little less severe than other felony arrests but there should never be any doubt that such a charge could follow a minor for many years. In the event that you or your child has been accused of a juvenile crime, regardless of its nature, a proficient California juvenile crime attorney is the only logical step forward.

Drug and alcohol offenses were reported as relatively low with only 7% of felony arrests recounted in 2015. Nevertheless, in California, many of these charges are disproportionate and unfair for the offender, leaving generally innocent parties in the crosshairs of the criminal justice system. Perhaps the lowest rate of reported crimes was for sexual offenses which make up 3% of felony arrests. Albeit, a guilty verdict for a California sex crime will likely follow the offender around for life, and obtaining the representation you deserve can be crucial to your freedom.
