Overall California Crime Rates Per 100,000 PeopleSan Diego Legal News
The most recent reports concerning crime in the state of California have shown many decreases alongside some increases, as well, according to the California Department of Justice. While many crimes such as robbery, motor vehicle theft, and drug charges saw a decrease, the overall arrest rate for violent offenses increased. The general trend may be an optimistic one as the majority of crimes seem to be going down, however, when looking at the total crime rate per 100,000 Californians, there is still much room for improvement.
California Theft and Violent Crime Rates
The majority of California crimes have been declining when looked at from 2017 to 2018. Between that time, violent crimes decreased by 1.5 percent, homicide by 4.3 percent, and robbery by 4.5 percent. Additionally, the burglary and total rate of larceny-theft went down by 7.3 and 3.7 percent, respectively. However, the rate of crime and the rate of arrests are not to be confused as the total violent offense arrest rate increased by 0.3 percent.
The statistics have shown that the property crime rate decreased by as much as 5.1 percent as the rate of motor vehicle theft saw an even steeper decline of 8.3 percent. Perhaps the largest decrease was reported in the total number of juvenile arrests which went down by 17.9 percent. Nevertheless, it is also important to look at exactly what these percentages mean in terms of the actual number of crimes being committed, and why they occur.
Arrest Rates for the Population at Risk
The total arrest rate for all crimes in California during 2018 was reported at 3,527 per 100,000 people. This is a decrease of 1.1 percent which can seem encouraging but in a reported population of approximately 39.56 million, this number translates to more than 1.3 million arrests. Although this number includes arrests of all kinds from petty to violent, it also means a lot of people in need of a California criminal defense as many arrests are often fraught with various complications and circumstances.
Many crimes such as theft and drug offenses are near direct results of poverty and desperation. While this does not excuse anyone for committing these crimes, it does work toward the understanding that thousands of otherwise good people are arrested in California each year because of seriously misguided mistakes. This is often particularly true in the event of juvenile arrests, and it is important to understand the need for a skilled California criminal defense attorney who recognizes the variances of your case, no matter who you are or why you were arrested.
